Community YMCA

History

In April 1995, a group of local Somers residents believed that a YMCA was needed in Northern Westchester, and in March 1996, a committee began program planning.

In 1996, with the work of volunteers, the White Plains YMCA staff and a $50,000 grant from IBM, the Community YMCA began a preschool and kindergarten program in Purdys as well as a School Age After School program at the Somers Intermediate School.  Summer swim lessons were added that same year at the held locally in the community.  That October the first year annual Y’s Halloween Parade took place, which still continues today.

In 1997, the name of Community YMCA of Northern Westchester was formally adopted and two new sites were added serving Somers at the Primrose Elementary School and North Salem at the Pequenakonck Elementary School.

In December 1998, the Corporate Board of the YMCA of CNW voted to establish the Community Y as one of its official branches.  That summer our first camp was held, with over 100 children participating.

In 1999 the Pleasantville  site was added to serve both Bedford Road and Pleasantville Middle Schoool.

In 2004, we expanded again to the Mahopac Central School District, serving their three district elementary schools.

Today we serve over 350 children daily in our child care programs, and we are leading the way in child care in Westchester & Putnam Counties.
